The short version

We do not ask you for personal information and we have no accounts or logins. Our advertising and analytics partners do set cookies and collect data about your visit. You can control this through the cookie banner and your browser. We do not sell your data.

This policy explains what happens to information about you when you use this site.

Who we are

Cancel TV Licence is an independent website. We are not TV Licensing, the BBC, or any government body.

The data controller for this site is .

What we collect

We do not ask you for anything. There is no login, no account, no newsletter, and no form that asks for your name or your licence number.

The eligibility checker and the refund calculator run entirely in your browser. Your answers are never sent to us and never stored. Close the tab and they are gone.

We do collect some information automatically, and our partners collect more.

Information collected automatically

When you visit any website, including this one, some information is recorded by the server. This includes your IP address, your browser and device type, the pages you looked at, and the site you came from.

We use this to keep the site working and to see which pages people read.

We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. It sets cookies and collects data about your visit, including a shortened version of your IP address. Google's privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Advertising

This site is paid for by display advertising. That is the only way it makes money.

We use Google AdSense to show adverts. Google and its partners use cookies to show adverts based on your previous visits to this and other websites. This is sometimes called personalised advertising.

You can turn off personalised advertising at any time in your Google Ad Settings at adssettings.google.com. You can also opt out of third party advertising cookies at aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.com.

Google's advertising privacy policy is at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

We do not choose the individual adverts you see. We do not endorse advertisers, and we are not responsible for what they do with data they collect. Their privacy policies apply to them, not us.

Cookies

Cookies are small files stored in your browser.

Necessary cookies keep the site working, remember your cookie choices, and let our caching work. The site cannot function without them.

Advertising and analytics cookies are set by the partners above. They are not necessary, and you can refuse them.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Doing so may stop parts of the site working.

What we do not do

We do not sell your personal information.

We do not share it with anyone except the advertising and analytics partners named above, and our hosting provider.

We do not build a profile of you, and we do not know who you are.

We do not use your data to contact you, because we have no way to contact you.

Where your data goes

Our advertising and analytics partners are large international companies. Data they collect may be processed outside the UK, including in the United States.

Where that happens, they are required to use lawful transfer mechanisms such as the UK addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses. That is their obligation, and their policies set out how they meet it.

How long we keep it

We do not hold personal data ourselves, so there is nothing for us to keep.

Server logs held by our hosting provider are kept for 30 to 90 days.

Data held by our advertising and analytics partners is kept according to their own policies.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data is held about you
  • Ask for it to be corrected
  • Ask for it to be deleted
  • Object to it being processed
  • Ask for it to be restricted
  • Withdraw consent for cookies at any time
  • Complain to the Information Commissioner's Office

To exercise any of these with us, email . In practice we hold almost nothing, so most requests are better directed at the partner that actually holds the data.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or on 0303 123 1113.

Children

This site is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
