In short

Cancel TV Licence is an independent guide to cancelling a UK TV licence. We are not TV Licensing, not the BBC, and not part of any government body. We explain the rules in plain English and tell you exactly what to do.

Why this site exists

The rules on TV licences are simple. Finding a clear explanation of them is not.

The official pages tell you what the law says. They do not tell you which reason to give when you cancel, or that waiting a month costs you fifteen pounds, or that the email address you use can undo your cancellation weeks later.

We built this site to say those things out loud.

What we do

We answer one question: can you stop paying, and how.

Every page here does the same job. It tells you what the rule is, what it means for you, and what to do next. No hedging, no filler, no padding out a page to make it look thorough.

We also say when the answer is no. If someone at your address watches live TV, you need a licence, and we will tell you that rather than dress it up.

What we are not

We are not TV Licensing. We cannot cancel your licence, look up your account, chase your refund, or change your details. Those are all done by TV Licensing, at tvlicensing.co.uk or on 0300 790 6071.

We are not the BBC, not the government, and not paid by either.

If you have arrived here looking to contact TV Licensing directly, our contact page has their numbers and address.

Where our information comes from

Everything here is drawn from two sources.

The first is TV Licensing itself, at tvlicensing.co.uk. Fees, rules, phone numbers and the wording of the No Licence Needed form all come from there.

The second is GOV.UK, for the law behind the licence and the concessions.

Where a page gives a figure, a date or a phone number, it comes from one of those two. We do not invent statistics and we do not repeat claims we cannot check.

How we keep it current

The fee changes every April. Concessions change. Phone numbers change.

We date every page and check the figures each time the fee changes. If you find something out of date, tell us and we will fix it.

How the site is paid for

This site carries display advertising. That is how it pays for itself.

Advertisers have no say in what we write. We do not accept payment to recommend a service, and we do not take money from TV Licensing, the BBC, or anyone selling a cancellation service.

Never pay anyone to cancel your TV licence. Cancelling is free and takes five minutes. Any service charging a fee to do it for you is taking your money for nothing.
